The Carhartt Detroit Jacket: A Working-Class Icon, Reborn

The Carhartt Detroit Jacket: A Working-Class Icon, Reborn

Few jackets carry the weight of the Carhartt WIP Detroit. Since its introduction in the early 1980s, it has moved seamlessly between the factory floor, the film set, and the street, accumulating a cultural currency that most brands spend decades trying to manufacture.

Built for Work. Worn by Everyone.

Carhartt's Detroit Jacket was designed with one purpose: durability. Cut from heavy-duty duck canvas and lined for warmth, it was the go-to outerwear for American tradespeople who needed a jacket that could take a beating. The blanket-lined interior, the corduroy collar, the deep chest pockets, every detail had function in mind before fashion.

That utilitarian honesty is exactly what gave it longevity.

On Screen and in Culture

The Detroit Jacket has appeared in films and television across multiple decades, worn by characters who exist on the margins — mechanics, drifters, labourers, artists. It's been spotted on the back of Cooper (Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar), Corey Lambert (Jeremy Renner in Wind River) and Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin in Outer Range) to name a few.

It's the jacket that doesn't try and that's precisely why it resonates.

Carhartt WIP and the European Edit

Carhartt Work In Progress, the European licensee has refined the Detroit for a contemporary audience without compromising its DNA. The WIP version retains the boxy silhouette, the canvas construction, and the utilitarian detailing, while offering colourways and fits that translate naturally into modern wardrobes. Whether in classic Black, earthy Hamilton Brown, or muted Olive, it sits equally well over a heavyweight hoodie or a simple tee. This Fall/Winter 26 sees the Detroit land in a Feather Tree Camo number which in our opinion is an absolute belter.

Coming Soon to Patina

We're bringing the Carhartt WIP Detroit Jacket to Patina in four colourways: Black, Hamilton Brown, Olive and Feather Tree Camo, all in the Dearborn Canvas construction. If you know, you know. If you're just discovering it, consider this your introduction to one of workwear's most enduring pieces.
